Spring is upon us, the April rains are falling and life has renewed hope. The earth is waiting for the winter thaw to be complete so the seeds from the fall will renew themselves and burst into color to brighten our surroundings. Focus on Children's Health & Nutrition Issues
According to the Centers for Disease Control children from 6-19 years of age showed an increase in obesity of 14% between 1970 and 1999. Adding to this problem there is alarming data that shows a new trend in children as young as 2 years old developing kidney stones. Contributors to these problems are being identified as: too much sodium in their diets (including fast food and processed meats and other food items); lack of exercise and lack of fresh fruits and vegetables in the daily diets.

There have been articles that suggest children who watch extended television and are exposed to food commercials are more prone to obesity, poor diet and kidney stones than children who have limited television time of less than two hours a day.

Side effects of obesity are diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and emotional growth issues (social growth & well being, academic growth and self esteem). Read Entire Article

It makes sense that Jay Iverson likes to build things, because in his 24 years at Mann Packing Company he's helped build the internal sales group into an integral part of the company's operations.

The internal sales group receives all produce orders, by phone, fax, e-mail or EDI, processes the orders, makes arrangements for shipping and transportation; manages pricing, then follows up on invoicing and accounts receivable.

"We facilitate where the rubber hits the road," Jay said. "We can take the sale - or make the sale."

Jay says he has literally grown up with the company. When he started in sales there were three people in the department and it was a nine month position because Mann was still a seasonal shipper with no winter production.

Question # 1 : I am planting my spring garden and I want to grow my own Broccolini® because I love it so much! But none of the garden shops seem to be able to help me. Can I buy them direct from Mann?

Answer # 1 : No, the seeds are not available to the public. Mann owns the trademark on Broccolini® and the seeds are only available to our growers. Sorry.

Question # 2: After seeing the article in Nutrition Health Action, I want to know where to buy Mann's Sweet Potatoes in Canada?

Answer #2: Coming this month Mann's Sweet Potatoes will be available at selected Sobey's; A&P Metro; Loblaw's and Safeway.

This looks like the perfect weekend to get outside and plant my garden. Since I always have a good supply of Mann's Fresh Vegetables at my house I will be planting tomatoes, radishes, zucchini and some cabbage. What a perfect combination!
